Umbo

What is an umbo?

An umbo is the centermost point of the tympanic membrane, or eardrum. It is the point at which the tympanic membrane is most medially displaced. The manubrium of the malleus, the outermost bone of the middle ear, is attached to the umbo, and its medial pull creates the cone shape of the eardrum.

What is the umbo in the ear?

The umbo is located in the center of the tympanic membrane, where the malleus attaches. It is a small, white protrusion that can be seen through the ear canal.

What is the function of an umbo?

The umbo helps to transmit sound waves from the ear canal to the middle ear. When sound waves hit the eardrum, they cause the umbo to vibrate. The vibrations of the umbo are then transmitted to the malleus, which in turn transmits them to the other bones of the middle ear. The bones of the middle ear then transmit the vibrations to the inner ear, where they are converted into electrical signals that are sent to the brain.
